Late June, the garden progresses, and the meadows and peonies are at their best.

This is one of the most beautiful times of the year at the Maine Audubon Sanctuary.  The meadows are all a riot of yellows and whites and greens and the peony gardens are in full bloom.  And our weather has been about as ideal as weather comes: mid-seventies, sunny, low humidity during the days and low 50s at night.  It doesn't get much better than this. Enjoy:

Onions are looking good...
...as is the chard

Not much change, yet...

Quick visit to the garden this evening after returning from the Strawberry Shortcake feed in Connecticut (excellent, as usual).  Not much has changed since last week.  Slow progress, but most everything is doing well.

We should be able to use some lettuce in the next week and the chard looks about ready to start using.

The poppies are gone by, but the lupines are spectacular!

A beautiful evening, a bit buggy, but the wind kept them from being too pesty (pesky?).

Waiting for things to start happening...

A quick visit to the garden this afternoon to transplant a few poppies from an former gardener's plot and to see how things are growing.  Most everything looks fine, things are just taking their time establishing their roots before the growing begins above the ground surface.  But now that the weather is warming up, we should be seeing progress soon, and weeds, too.  Also, our established poppies are now blooming.

Planted

This past weekend was spectacular.  Beautiful spring weather, ideal for getting the garden planted and finishing all the big jobs, except replacing the fence.  We enjoyed a few hours late Saturday afternoon/evening, and then again Sunday morning and late afternoon evening.

Saturday evening, after planting...

Still waiting on the poppies

Sunday afternoon...I count 16 other gardeners working on their plots
Sunday evening we also took a walk around the trails of the Audubon Sanctuary to check out the sculpture displays that are scattered around the woods and meadows (SCULPTURE at Maine Audubon: A Celebration of Art and Nature).  I have included some photos of some of the sculptures.

This guy was trying to impress the ladies...without much success

And finally, this evening (Monday, June 2), we stopped by to water and check things out.  Looking good!
