| Our Rhubarb |
After an old fashioned New England winter that seemed particularly harsh relative to recent winters, and after a typical slowly progressing Maine coastal spring, that still is slowly progressing and maybe even regressing lately, we finally got our garden started this past Memorial Day weekend. The weeds were doing very well, as was the Rhubarb. And we finally have some poppies making a reappearance this spring.
| The Meadow Plot, reconfigured |
Our "Meadow Plot" (the one nearest the meadow on the outside edge of the community garden plots) was in need of some reconfiguration, so I narrowed the beds along the front and back edges and transplanted mums and oregano in them in hopes of not having to fight as many weeds, in particular the witch grass. I then remade the inner beds, going from 3 beds and 4 paths to 2 larger beds and 3 paths. We are hoping that this arrangement will be easier to work with and that we will have a little more space for plantings.

We finally got some plants in after all the bed preparations, after picking up seedlings at the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning. Planted lettuce, chard, carrots, radishes, onions, parsley, marigolds and cosmos. Still to come are the tomatoes, squash, peppers, and beans. Nothing too adventurous - we mostly go with what the groundhogs aren't too crazy for. We will also be replacing the fencing on the Meadow Plot. Another big job, but it must be done.
